Are You Watering Your Soul? Jesus and Spiritual Thirst

Are You Watering Your Soul? How Jesus Quenches Our Deepest Thirst

Plants get thirsty — and so do we.

I have a large, big-leafed plant sitting in my front window. I admire this plant because I have actually managed to keep it alive. I’ve never had much of a green thumb. I tend to either overwater or underwater, and my plants usually suffer for it.

I struggle with where to place them for optimal sunlight. Too much. Not enough. Sometimes I simply forget… and leave them thirsty.

And thirsty plants don’t flourish.

What Plants Teach Us About Spiritual Thirst

A growing plant undergoes a process called photosynthesis. It uses energy from the sun to create food for nourishment. It depends on:

  • Sunlight

  • Water absorbed through its roots

  • Carbon dioxide from the air

Without these, it cannot survive.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gained wisdom about how much water a plant needs and where it should be placed. But one thing remains certain:

A plant will always need water.
It will always need light.
It will always need air.

Relieve it of those things — and it begins to wither.

Are We Neglecting Our Souls?

As humans, we rarely forget to feed our bodies. We give ourselves rest. Movement. Nourishment.

But as women of God — how are we sustaining life in our souls?

How are we quenching our thirst?

Are we filling our hearts and minds with the nourishment needed to flourish in what God has for us?

Jesus Is the Only Living Water

In John 4:14, we read:

“But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Jesus quenches our thirst.

Scripture is filled with references to thirst and water. Again and again, Jesus invites us to come to Him.

  • John 7:37

  • Revelation 22:17

  • Psalm 63:1

We can strive to fill ourselves with:

  • Money

  • Relationships

  • Success

  • Achievement

  • Adventure

These things are not sinful in themselves. But if we look to them for ultimate fulfillment, we will always be left wanting more.

They cannot sustain us.

We will always be thirsty.

The Only True Source of Fulfillment

Jesus promises that He alone is our source.

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
— John 14:6

The question becomes simple:

Are you watering your soul today?

Questions to Ponder About Spiritual Thirst

Take a quiet moment and reflect:

  • Where are you looking to find fulfillment in your life?

  • What are you depending on to quench your thirst?

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to gently reveal anything you may be placing above Jesus.

  • What could you add to your daily rhythm to invite Him into your everyday life?

  • What might the Lord be prompting you to release?
